Partly blank charts, each with its own answer key

Choose Practice (some blank) and the generator empties 25%, 50% or 75% of the squares at random. Each practice sheet has a sheet number, shown in its footer and in its link, so you can print the same sheet and its matching key again. The New practice sheet button gives a different set of blanks.

We read the top five Google results on September 24, 2026 (a Scholastic PDF, Dad's Worksheets, The Good and the Beautiful, a Pittsburg Unified School District PDF and a Teachers Pay Teachers search page). All offer a fixed empty 12 × 12 grid on US Letter. None offers a partly blank chart with a key for that exact sheet, an A4 version, or a choice of size. The district PDF also prints a second, empty page.

How many facts does a blank chart really test?

A 12 × 12 chart has 144 squares, but 7 × 8 and 8 × 7 are the same fact, so there are 78 different facts. Take away the 1, 2, 5 and 10 tables (England's curriculum puts the 2, 5 and 10 tables first, in Year 2), and 36 facts are left: 3, 4, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 12 multiplied by one another. Those are the facts worth practicing again.

Ways to fill in the chart

  • One row at a time, by skip counting: row 4 is 4, 8, 12, 16 and so on. This builds each times table in order.
  • Easy tables first: fill in the 1s, 2s, 5s and 10s, then the square numbers on the diagonal, then copy each answer to the matching square on the other side of the diagonal (7 × 8 gives 8 × 7).
  • Check with the key: page 2 prints every product. On a practice chart the answers for the blank squares are in bold, so they are quick to find.

Copying across the diagonal uses the commutative property. Common Core 3.OA.B.5 puts it this way: "If 6 × 4 = 24 is known, then 4 × 6 = 24 is also known. (Commutative property of multiplication.)"

Which grades use it

In the United States, Common Core 3.OA.C.7 says that by the end of Grade 3, children should "know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers." In England, Year 4 pupils must "recall multiplication and division facts for multiplication tables up to 12 × 12". A blank 10 × 10 chart fits the first goal and a blank 12 × 12 chart fits the second; choose the size above.

Printing

  • Black and white is already selected, so the empty chart copies cleanly. Switch to Color if you prefer.
  • Print at Actual size (100%). Each square on the 12 × 12 chart prints about 0.6 inches (1.5 cm) wide on US Letter.
  • Uncheck the answer key box to print the empty chart alone.
